Landscape architecture and development have advanced tremendously in the last few decades. People are putting more attention into their home gardens than ever before. One of the prevalent requests that I receive, is for water features. Dedication to both technology and aesthetics has rendered an endless score of possibilities to the consumer. Material choices and imaginative design ideas are now abundant. New products are now being imported into the United States from all over the globe. We Californians love choices, particularly when coupled with imagination and affordability.
The Asian culture have been producing environments for thousands of years. Their belief is that you show respect for your family and friends by the way you entertain them. They purposely incorporate the senses in their designs. Sight, smell and sound have become very important when planning home environments. Lush gardens with fragrance and color fulfill the sight and smell aspects. However, many overlook the sound element. I feel that creating a focal point using water is imperative. The soothing sound of falling water is conducive to any social gathering. It provides a sense of tranquility and will also masque undesirable sounds . Entertaining a large group or just sipping wine with a few close friends, the sound of water can only enhance your experience. It is the dessert to a fine meal.
There is also a methodology in dealing with water. It naturally flows downward. Controlling its direction, distance and the depth it falls will determine the sounds that are produced. Also, additional features can be added to control the volume of water flow. You can have a sheet of water cascading into a pond to produce dramatic sounds or trickling water for more intimate gatherings. The possibilities are endless.
The maintenance aspects of a water feature are minimal in comparison to the advantages. With proper instruction, maintenance need not be overwhelming and time consuming. This is why the expertise of a reputable designer is of so much significance. A brief instruction may be all that is necessary for easy care.
I endeavor to approach all my topics on the basis of dollar value versus aesthetic effect. Maintenance and safety factors also play high priority in my recommendations as well.
